NEW PROJECT LAUNCHED TO RECORD SCOTLAND’S RURAL PAST

Scotland’s Rural Past is a five-year nationwide project that has been set up to support local communities to investigate and document abandoned rural settlements.

SRP will raise the awareness of this fascinating archaeological resource by helping set up locally based projects with communities throughout Scotland. It will encourage volunteers to join together and discover more about historic rural settlements in their area through researching, recording, interpreting, and promoting them. The data collected will be added to the records of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland and help the future preservation and conservation of these rural sites.

The SRP team is working closely with highly experienced archaeologists from RCAHMS to provide training in archaeological field survey and recording techniques as well as in documentary research. SRP will also offer support to develop educational projects to raise awareness of and improve access to Scotland’s rural history.

The SRP Project is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, RCAHMS, Historic Scotland, Highlands and Islands Enterprise and the National Trust for Scotland.

COULD YOUR GROUP ADOPT-A-MONUMENT?

The Council for Scottish Archaeology (CSA) is pleased to announce the appointment of Helen Bradley, as CSAs new Adopt-a-Monument Officer.

The Adopt-a-Monument scheme is co-ordinated by the Council for Scottish Archaeology, with grant assistance from Historic Scotland. CSA is responsible for the promotion and management of the scheme. The role of CSA will be to act as a facilitator, providing information, advice and reassurance to participating groups. A long-term aim for the project is to provide local volunteers with valuable skills in archaeological recording, which can be used to empower and sustain community archaeology at grass roots level. Another benefit of the scheme will be the promotion of a healthier lifestyle, encouraging groups to become active in outdoor fieldwork, whilst at the same time increasing their enjoyment and understanding of local heritage.

Helen Bradley, Adopt-a-Monument Officer said, 'I am really excited to be working with communities, especially in areas of Scotland where archaeology is under-represented, on such a major project. The importance of the Adopt-a-Monument scheme lies in its emphasis on volunteer groups taking the leading role in caring for neglected sites which are in real need of action'.
